2015 NCAA Playoff Points: Week 6

The good news: We are down to just 16 undefeated teams left out of 128 at the highest level of college football. The bad news: they are still heavily centered in the power conferences to the point that based on the format of the Death to the BCS Playoffs, I still can't start making mock brackets.

Nonetheless, Week 6 provided a lot of drama and some great games while continuing to narrow the field. Week 5 saw the start of some stability in the rankings, as we're in full-fledged conference mode, so win total rankings are going to largely remain constant from here on out. Playoff Points, however, are bound to start seeing some fluctuations as teams with strong showings out of conference may find nightmarish situations in their conferences.

If you need a refresher on how Playoff Points work, you can refer back to my Week 1 post. Here's an updated look at the numbers.

If you want to see exact numbers for each team and conference, you can view my spreadsheet here. There were a few small changes here and there, but I think win total rankings did remain the same. The SEC lost all of its first place rankings to the Pac-12 and Big Ten. Meanwhile, the Sun Belt remains the dregs of FBS football.

Playoff Points saw some swings in both degrees however. Individually, we went up from six teams in double digit First Degree Playoff Points last week to a whopping 27 this week. 6-0 Florida currently leads the nation with 19 points, while Utah is in second place with 17 points. The Big Ten has eight teams in double digits, led by Ohio State's 16, with Northwestern and Michigan right behind them at 15 apiece. Over in Second Degree, Michigan currently leads the way with 7.2 points accumulated from its five wins, while Utah is averaging 6.6 PP2 in its victories.

These numbers, along with some computer rankings that take margin of victory into account as well as my NCSS rankings will all be taken into account starting as early as a week from now, when I will take as many of these resources as are available as possible and I'm not leaving out any undefeated teams to create a mock Death to the BCS Playoffs bracket. The official one will not come out until December when all conference championships (and with those, the automatic bids) are all claimed.
