2020 COAS Pigskin Pick 'Em: Week 9

We're approaching the halfway point of the NFL season, and the coalition continues its quest to pick NFL games against the spread!

Adam has been on a bit of a heater of late, maybe not on the whole, but he took five of our seven disputed games last week to increase his group lead. Much of that has come on the back of a red hot hero pick streak, including a 3-1 mark last week along. You can view how we've all picked in relation to each other here. This page is especially important, given that our ESPN standings are not correct since both Adam and I each have one more point on there than we should.

This week, Adam and I disagree on just four games out of 14. Come on, moving back into a tie for first!

Thursday Night

Green Bay Packers @ San Francisco 49ers (+2.5)
Lucas: 49ers. Yes, San Francisco is injured to hell and back, but Green Bay is down to two running backs with a combined 15 NFL carries, factoring in injury and COVID, and JaMycal Hasty will probably double his career rushing numbers against an absolutely awful Packer run defense. Also, never bet on Green Bay in California.
Adam: Packers. Dayum. A-A-Ron and Davante Adams have connected for 250 yds and five, yes 5, touchdowns. Is this still Angry A-A-Ron over Green Bay's drafting of Love? Only give 2.5 to the one arm and one leg Niners.

Sunday, Early Afternoon

Denver Broncos @ Atlanta Falcons (-3.5)
Lucas: Falcons. I trust Denver less than I do Atlanta... and that's saying something.
Adam: Falcons. Ummm, Atlanta surprised me a little a beat the Panthers, while Denver had a epic comeback and stole one against the Chargers. I don’t love giving a field goal at home, but I'll try it.

Seattle Seahawks @ Buffalo Bills (+2.5)
Lucas: Seahawks. Yeah, I know, the whole "West Coast team playing at noon" thing, but I don't totally trust Buffalo here. I'll lay a field goal.
Adam: Seahawks. A battle by the falls this week. The Mafia comes out in droves to watch their beloved Bills get spanked. I wonder if we will have another player retire at halftime again. Ah, the good old days.
Lucas note: Good times.

Chicago Bears @ Tennessee Titans (+5.5)
Lucas: Bears. Chicago hasn't really been blown out yet this season, and I think they can to some degree contain Derrick Henry. Taking the points.
Adam: Titans. Seems the Bears are being outed as the frauds they are. 5-1 was a rather lucky start. Having lost the past two games, they come in angry, but don’t put up much of a roar.

Detroit Lions @ Minnesota Vikings (-3.5)
Lucas: Lions. On the one hand, I'm embarassed about the Vikings loss. On the other, it screws up Minnesota's tank...

Adam: Lions. Detroit has generally outperformed expectations this year across the board. And Thielen is discovering just how bad Cousins is. Let us not forget Cousins almost missed his gender reveal "five yard" pass.

Baltimore Ravens @ Indianapolis Colts (+2.5)
Lucas: Ravens. I totally put "Baltimore Colts" down on here originally. Good ol' throwback game.
Adam: Ravens. Hollywood called out the Ravens for not using him in any large part. Frankly, I agree. Why they are not throwing 25-plus yards each play to Hollywood and just allow him to feast? I see his fortunes change: he goes 9-12, 225 yards and two or three touchdowns. Pick him up on all your fantasy teams.

Carolina Panthers @ Kansas City Chiefs (-10.5)
Lucas: Chiefs. Well, if the Chiefs covered a 20 point spread against the Jets...
Adam: Chiefs. Laying 10.5 against Teddy B and the Panthers does not feel good or like the right thing to do. But since it worked so well last week, that is precisely why I will do it again.
Lucas note: And now I feel better!

New York Giants @ Washington Football Team (-3.5)
Lucas: Giants. I mean, if New York went toe to toe with a good Bucs team, they can cover a field goal spread against the nameless.
Adam: Giants. DJ kept the game close against the GOAT and Tampa last week. Is that a suggestion that the Bucs are not all that good, or that the G-Men are much better than expected? I’m banking on the latter. DJ was a highly questionable PI call away from brining his team back to send it to overtime.

Houston Texans @ Jacksonville Jaguars (+6.5)
Lucas: Texans. No Gardner Minshew means I'm not taking the points here. Let Houston get back on track.
Adam: Texans. Who is the Jags' QB this week? Minshew is out, so... *checks notes* *scratches head* ...*looks up college to try and get a sense of who he is* (Oregon State BTW.) Ummm... Luton. Who cares, he will not do well. If you are benching Minshew, its desperation.

Sunday, Late Afternoon

Las Vegas Raiders @ Los Angeles Chargers (-1.5)
Lucas: Raiders. Okay, everyone has been making fun of the Falcons, and rightfully so, but right under our noses the Chargers have been blowing double digit leads all freaking season.
Adam: Raiders. With a 1.5 point line, it really just comes down to who will win. I am taking the Raiders on that front.

Pittsburgh Steelers @ Dallas Cowboys (+10.5)
Lucas: Steelers. Yeah, it's double digits, but do you really want to take points with an offense that hasn't found the end zone in three weeks? I know I don't.
Adam: Steelers. The Nooch looks like he will only get one start, as Jerrah sees fit to replace him with Garrett Gilbert. For those of you asking, he is an SMU grad, and he last played on the Cleveland Browns... that should tell you his general ability. But alas, he has only thrown six passes in the NFL.

Miami Dolphins @ Arizona Cardinals (-4.5)
Lucas: Dolphins. Is it Tua Time?

Adam: Cardinals. Look, the Fins are coming off a monstrous game against the Rams, but they were helped by the generally poor play of Goff. Miami will have Tua in his second game. It will be fun to see two five foot nothing quarterbacks play (yeah, Tua is actually six foot even, but still), but Murray outlasts.

Sunday Night

New Orleans Saints @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-4.5)
Lucas: Saints. Taking the points in what should be a good one. But I have just one request, NBC: can we not do a Breaking News scroll at the bottom every time Brees and Brady trade touchdown pass leads? Thank you.
Adam: Saints. A great SNF game. This one comes down to can Tampa be Tampa, and can Kamara be Kamara. I’ll take Kamara to do crazy things and happily take 4.5 points.

Monday Night

New England Patriots @ New York Jets (+7.5)
Lucas: Patriots. Jets, you had one job.
Adam: Jets. I wonder what the Pats' war room looked like coming into the trade deadline. How many deals did Belichick’s pup pass on?
Lucas note: Still a better GM than Bill O'Brien.

Records So Far
Lucas: 60-59 (5-9 last week)
Adam: 64-55 (8-6 last week)
Joe: 54-65 (6-8 last week)
Geoffrey: 62-57 (7-7 last week)
Jim: 58-61 (6-8 last week)
