2016 NBA/ABA Tournament of Champions: Group Play Day 8

It's officially the second week of games now in our third running of the NBA Tournament of Champions. After some spring preliminaries, we began the month of July with 72 teams fighting for 32 spots and a chance at immortality in being considered the greatest team of all time. Even though we are into the second week, it's still incredibly early in the tournament, and anything can happen over the next four-plus weeks.

Groups E and G are back in action after a day off, while Groups A and C return to the court following a two day layover. In the case of Group C, they are concluding home-and-home series, the second such occurrence so far this tournament.

All simulations are provided by WhatIfSports.com. Let's play some basketball.

Group C

'08 Boston Celtics 110, @ '75 Kentucky Colonels 109 (OT)
Louie Dampier hit a corner three at the buzzer to force overtime after Paul Pierce hit a pair of free throws to make it a three point game, and the Colonels rode the momentum from that bucket into overtime. They led by four with 1:22 left, but couldn't buy a bucket, and after Pierce scored with 14 seconds left, he fouled Dampier to stop the clock. Dampier missed both free throws, the Celtics got the rebound, and after Garnett missed a left wing jumper, Ray Allen grabbed the rebound, snuck back behind the three point line, and buried the game-winner at the buzzer. That shot gave Allen 15 points, but Pierce was the driving force with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Kevin Garnett added 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four blocks for Boston. Artis Gilmore paced Kentucky with 22 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks, Bird Averitt added 20 points, and Wil Jones had a solid floor game of nine points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. Louie Dampier finished with 16 points, but 0-2 from the line.

'12 Miami Heat 109, @ '68 Pittsburgh Pipers 104
Miami used a 36-16 second quarter advantage to open up a 25 points halftime lead, but the Pipers managed to roar back late, even taking the lead with about two and a half minutes left. Chris Bosh put the Heat ahead for good with 1:20 left to remain unbeaten and keep the Pipers out of the win column. LeBron James had only 13 points, but pulled down eight rebounds and dished out nine assists, while Dwyane Wade had 19 points and seven rebounds and Chris Bosh added 17 and six for Miami. Connie Hawkins led Pittsburgh with 25 points and 15 rebounds, Chico Vaughn added 24 points, and Art Heyman chipped in 23 points and 11 rebounds.

@ '56 Philadelphia Warriors 102, '05 San Antonio Spurs 100
Tim Duncan got the night off from Gregg Popovich, and I think he might regret that decision in this one. San Antonio led by 12 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Warriors carved their way back into the game, with Neil Johnston hitting the eventual game-winner with 1:40 to play. He finished with 25 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Paul Arizin added 23 points, and Jack George doled out 13 assists to go with 12 points for Philadelphia. Beno Udrih was the Spurs' leading scorer with 13 points, Glenn Robinson had 12 points in limited action, and Manu Ginobili finished with 11.

'99 San Antonio Spurs 93, @ '00 Los Angeles Lakers 91
Sean Elliott's three with 20 seconds left gave the Spurs their first win of the tournament, and Shaquille O'Neal's turnover with seven seconds left sealed it. Elliott finished with 10 points, but David Robinson helped carry the day for San Antonio with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks, while Tim Duncan added 13 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocks. Shaq finished with 23 points and 19 rebounds for the Lakers, while Kobe Bryant added 17 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, but also turned it over seven times.

Group A

@ '91 Chicago Bulls 103, '95 Houston Rockets 77
The Bulls held Houston to 4-23 shooting from beyond the arc and forced 21 turnovers en route to a blowout that keeps them in range of the group leaders. Michael Jordan went off for 32 points, nine rebounds, and four steals to lead Chicago, while Scottie Pippen had a ridiculous line of 25 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists, and five steals. Horace Grant chipped in 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Hakeem Olajuwon finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Rockets, and Clyde Drexler chipped in 17 and seven.

@ '14 San Antonio Spurs 102, '65 Boston Celtics 81
San Antonio held the Celtics to 12 first quarter points and limited them to 34.7 percent shooting for the game to move into a tie with the '83 Sixers for first place. Tim Duncan had 15 points, 19 rebounds, and four blocks to lead the Spurs, Kawhi Leonard added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Tony Parker and Patty Mills each chipped in 11 points. John Havlicek had 15 points off the bench to pace the Celtics' attack, while Bill Russell added 13 points, 21 rebounds, and five assists. Sam and K.C. Jones each scored 15 points for Boston.

@ '72 Los Angeles Lakers 120, '74 Boston Celtics 111
The Lakers had the edge on the glass and got to the line 42 times to keep pace with the '91 Bulls. Gail Goodrich had 25 points and seven rebounds to lead Los Angeles, Jerry West and Happy Hairston each added 20 points, and Wilt Chamberlain went off for 19 points and 18 rebounds. John Havlicek had 24 points, six rebounds, and seven assists to lead Boston, Jo Jo White and Don Nelson each dropped 18 points, and Paul Silas put up 14 points and 12 rebounds.

@ '70 Indiana Pacers 115, '06 Miami Heat 95
Indiana shot 53.3 percent from the floor and forced 18 turnovers, but Miami only hit three of their 16 three point attempts in a battle between winless teams. Six Pacers got into double figures led by 23 points from Roger A. Brown, Mel Daniels went off for 15 points and 17 rebounds, and John Barnhill added 15 points. Dwyane Wade had 22 points, five assists, and four steals to pace the Heat, Udonis Haslem finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Shaquille O'Neal chipped in 12 and six.

Group G

@ '72 Indiana Pacers 122, '66 Boston Celtics 111
The two teams combined to put up 219 field goal attempts, but Indiana got to the line 35 times compared to Boston's 12 to maintain control of the game. Six Pacers scored in double figures, including a ridiculous 24 point, 26 rebound performance by Mel Daniels. Freddie Lewis added 23 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, and Roger A. Brown added 22 points. John Havlicek paced the Celtics with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists, Satch Sanders chipped in 19 points, and Bill Russell finished with 10 points, 27 rebounds, and five assists.

@ '97 Chicago Bulls 102, '02 Los Angeles Lakers 94
Ron Harper hit a go-ahead jumper with 1:38 to play, and Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen took care of the rest from there as the Bulls took sole possession of first place in the group. Ron Harper had an excellent game with 17 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists, Scottie Pippen added 26, nine, and five, and Michael Jordan added 17 points and six rebounds for Chicago. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, Shaq finished with 17 points and six rebounds, and Samaki Walker came off the bench to chip in 13 points and 13 rebounds.

@ '67 Philadelphia 76ers 125, '58 St. Louis Hawks 101
Philly shot 54.8 percent from the floor while holding St. Louis to 34 percent to keep the Hawks winless in Group Play. Wilt Chamberlain had a monster game with 27 points, 31 rebounds, five assists, and four blocks to lead the Sixers, while Chet Walker added 21 points and 14 rebounds and Hal Greer chipped in 19 and nine. Bob Pettit paced the Hawks with 26 points and 14 rebounds, while Slater Martin and Cliff Hagan each scored 13 points.

@ '76 New York Nets 116, '64 Boston Celtics 95
Boston hit just one of 12 three pointers and was outrebounded by an athletic Nets team that has found its way back to .500. Julius Erving had 23 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, and six blocks to lead the Sixers, Brian Taylor added 15 points, and Swen Nater finished with nine points and 16 rebounds. It spoiled an 18 point, 24 rebound, five assist, six block quadruple-nickel night for Bill Russell, while Tommy Heinsohn scored 19 points for the Celtics.

Group E

'77 Portland Trail Blazers 135, @ '60 Boston Celtics 127
Boston made 52 field goals, but needed well over 100 attempts to reach that mark. Portland hit one more in 16 fewer attempts to overcome 21 giveaways and get back to .500. Bill Walton had the most ridiculous line I've ever seen: 29 points, 26 blocks, eight assists, and nine blocks for the Blazers. Maurice Lucas added 21 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists, and Lionel Hollins added 16 points and nine assists. Bob Cousy led the Celtics with 20 points and 12 assists, Tommy Heinsohn finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Bill Russell chipped in 16 points and 15 rebounds.

@ '15 Golden State Warriors 120, '71 Utah Stars 94
The Warriors went inside more than they have in prior games and took advantage of 44 free throw attempts. At the end of the day, Utah had no answer for Steph Curry, who went off for 39 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Klay Thompson added 23 points, and Draymond Green chipped in 11 points and six rebounds for Golden State. Zelmo Beaty had 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Stars, while Donnie Freeman finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

@ '53 Minneapolis Lakers 113, '61 Boston Celtics 105
The Lakers jumped out to a 38-23 lead after one quarter and never looked back to earn their first Tournament of Champions win that wasn't part of the Play In Round. George Mikan went bonkers with 36 points and 17 rebounds to lead Minneapolis to the victory, while Vern Mikkelsen added 19 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks. Tommy Heinsohn and Bob Cousy each finished with 21 points for the Celtics, Sam Jones added 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Bill Russell chipped in seven points, 15 rebounds, and six blocks.

'92 Chicago Bulls 126, @ '69 Boston Celtics 116 (OT)
The Celtics rallied from down 10 at halftime to take a late four point lead, but Michael Jordan scored the Bulls' final 10 points in regulation, including a game-tying bucket with 10 seconds left. Boston started the extra session well, but ran out of gas as Horace Grant's three point play halfway through overtime gave Chicago the lead for good. Jordan finished with 31 points, seven rebounds, and 11 assists to lead the Bulls, Scottie Pippen had a near triple-double with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists, and Grant finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Bailey Howell had 21 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Celtics, Bill Russell notched 16 points and 23 rebounds, and John Havlicek contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
